Tips for Getting Ready for Your Telehealth Session

Telehealth therapy is a conversation between the therapist and client that may take place via phone or using video counseling. The therapeutic session is one-on-one similar to a meeting in person.

Benefits of Telehealth

Getting help from a therapist using telehealth is convenient and beneficial for individuals who may have a busy schedule, work from home, or prefer video counseling. Telehealth has been shown to be as effective as in-person counseling due to the accessibility for both the therapist and client. Overall, it can aid in providing consistent care in the comfort of your own home or identified area that is private for you to get your counseling needs met.

How to Prepare for Your First Session

  • Find an area in your home or designated area of your choice (preferably a place where you will not be disturbed or heard). This may be a bedroom, home office, or even in your parked car.

  • If applicable notify your partner or family, that you will have a meeting and will not be available for a specific time. If you live with roommates and are having a session in your home, you can use a small fan or speaker playing music so that others do not overhear your conversation.

  • Make sure the device you are using has enough charge and is working properly prior to the beginning of the session.

  • Consider using headphones or earbuds when in session.

Reminders

  • It’s okay to feel uncomfortable during your first session, this happens in person too, and can happen during a video session. Understand that these feelings are normal, and your therapist will guide you through some of these feelings.

  • I have found that by the third or fourth session clients report feeling more at ease once they become familiar with being on video. If you find that telehealth therapy is too difficult, talk to your therapist about alternatives.

  • Treat your telehealth therapy session as if you are meeting with your therapist in person. Avoid engaging in tasks you normally wouldn’t do in an in-person session such as driving, folding laundry, or cooking.

  • Remember this time is for you, it’s a moment in the day that is focused on taking care of your emotional needs, and the more present you are the more effective it can be.

One step at a time, you are taking your life back.
